Mini Paintings on LiveFunky

On a rainy day this week I worked in the basement on these 4x4 squares of matboard. I have stacks of archival matboard I inherited from one of my framing gigs years ago. They are in beautiful shape (did I mention archival? these boards will probably outlive me!) and for smaller sizes, you can display them "as is" on a mini easel.
I spent the day tediously going through my livefunky shop updating listings (free shipping in the US and Canada) and eliminating all paintings larger than 8" x 10". I've decided to focus on small scale originals for livefunky. ACEOs will be making a comeback and I'm going to be working with some recycled paper panels from Kendra of www.GreenPost.etsy.com. I like the distinction now. I'll always be doodling and working on mini projects when I'm not working on big bad canvases in the studio.
It just worked out that these became abstract semi-landscape studies but in the future I'll be playing with my more linear and atmospheric abstracts. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Jess :)

This piece has had so many incarnations, but I'm pleased with the final product, though it's much different than I had expected. Lots of layering on paint and then wiping it away. I've been experimenting with various approaches to get the textural effects to pop. I'm in that mode where I want to consume paintings, hungry for more knowledge and experience. It's a thrilling feeling but I have to be careful to not get burned out. It's a very physical process and I'm focusing so intensely - it's exhausting, but in a good way, like a day at the beach. I'll be back at it tomorrow - time to relax and unwind for the night. Take care.

Layers and Levity
I took this shot last night after I finished Layers and Levity (seen below). After several days of adding layer after layer of fabric, paper, and paint, the last "blast" was done working on the floor with me standing over it painting with a wide, wet brush. It allowed me to work the surface all over in a different way then on an easel. I like the way the wet areas dried and created different textures.

I Think It Is Done
As you can see, I got back into the commissioned painting today (see yesterday's post below for a "before" picture). I worked in more translucent layers of color mixed with a glazing medium applied with a dry brush. A lot got scrubbed off with my hands or scratched at with the ends of brushes and my fingers. I'm happy with the more layered effects of color and texture now.This was an interesting experience, and GREAT first painting to do in the studio. It came with new challenges, and therefore new learned techniques and observations. I've done commissioned paintings based on previous works before but there were differences. For example, one was a large, painted canvas based on an ink drawing. The drawing was translated first onto the canvas, then after that, the painting took on it's own life. Another commission was for two large canvases in the style of one of my paintings called Ribbon Candy. Again, translating to such a huge scale based on an 8" x 10" concept took on it's own life, too. One more story (not to bore you here) was when I recreated Freedom for a commission. That was a drip painting, so there was only the decisions of what colors to mix and where to swipe my wide, wet brush that I had control over.
This time I had a print out of the original painting in front of me and I referred to it the whole way through. At one point I asked myself if this was even what the client wanted, but I knew that she was open to whatever the painting "became" so I went with my gut and kept looking.... and attempting to recreate. By last night I was pretty close to the original but that spark was missing. Today I came in and responded to the painting in front of me more than the printout. I let each space speak for itself - maybe it needed more green, or to merge with the "box" next to it - in each case I let those moments either be or change based on instinct, not what was in the original, which was what needed to happen to make this painting come alive. At least I think so,,, what do you think?

Guilty as charge - I have neglected my blog. BUT I have been painting a ton and listing all new works on Etsy, so that must count for something, eh? The cold, wet weather we faced for the last week has been instantly erased by some sweet sun shining today - and the weekend is supposed to be even better. I cannot describe how happy I am. Sun and comfortable temps make me feel whole.
I am looking forward to a girl's night tomorrow night. Even more sunshine my way - could I be anymore content right now?

It's been a good day, today. I woke to bright, blue skies and a melted, muddy backyard. Spring is so very much in the air, that my allergies caught on right away. I always forget about that part.... ah, but it's all worth it.
Leo is looking GREAT! It's been one week since we took him home and the progress is so dramatic. Just one more week and his stitches will come out and he'll be my cone-head-free happy little boy again!
Rob being back to work after his vacation means that he's sleeping in again (he works nights). So Leo slept in late with him, giving me some time to paint. These three new pieces are now listed in my Etsy shop at www.livefunky.etsy.com and there are a few more I am working on right now, as well.

I started painting yesterday after a few days break. Once again, the first few hours were "off". Paint, scrape, paint over, get caught up in details, paint over, and round and round it goes until something clicks and I've caught it. Once that happens I'd be a fool to do anything but follow it. I can clean the house tomorrow, right?
These two are the most recent. The others have more of a reduced landscape/Rothko vibe. I'll do a new post for those now.
